Excursion to Supreme Court

On 27 September 2011, Mr Malik, the Academic Head of the UOL Bachelor of laws Program lead a group of students to the Supreme Court to discuss the workings of the Law System.

The Supreme Court, one of the symbols of justice and fairness, is a place where tradition meets modernization. The Modern outlook of the building contradicts the library within that holds “antique” case studies of hearings dating back to 1932.

The current Supreme Court of Singapore is a modern building that is different from the former Supreme Court that is still standing nearby. The new building has a round disc on the top of the building at the 9th level, where the Court of Appeals stands. On this day, the students were able to witness an actual appeal case in action. Seizing the opportunity, Mr Malik explain some of the issues during these sessions with what they have learnt in class. This visit has brought to life some of the different law theories, old case studies and policies.

The excursion opened the eyes of both the students and me, as it’s a fun and interactive journey of understanding the law system by applying the works of law to what you can see, hear and experience. The classroom comes alive within the walls of the Supreme Court.

The excursion ends with a discussion held in a nearby coffee shop, where Mr Malik engages in discussions with the students. These discussion covers not only the theories read from books, it also includes the different life experiences or stories that each and every students see applicable to law. Its no wonder why law graduates speak so well, they never stop speaking in discussion in OR out of the classrooms!
